Review of Silent Running (1972) by Henri L — 07 Aug 2009
Thought-provoking concept plays out rather lifelessly thanks to the sleepwalking performance of Bruce Dern and the fact that the effects haven't aged very well. This movie is still worth seeing as one of the stepping stones between the high point of intelligent, allegorical sci-fi (which reached its apex three years earlier with 2001: A Space Odyssey) and the reinvention of the genre with Star Wars, Alien, Close Encounters, and the Star Trek films beginning six years later.
