Review of Silent Running (1972) by Steve H — 08 Dec 2012
Silent Running captures a feeling that was slowly creeping over all of the hippie culture of the time - a combination of dissolution and defiance. The message is still relevant today. Even better, it had cute robots YEARS before Star Wars.
It is visionary science fiction that encapsulates an imagined world gone mad for a very real world gone mad. At a time when the country was stuck in a war it could not "win" and growing evidence of mankind's negative impact on the environment, this film struck a chord.
That chord still resonates today, making Silent Running one of the most important, if not best, science fiction films of the last 50 years.
