Review of Silent Night, Deadly Night III: Better Watch Out! (1989) by Michael J — 29 Jun 2010
In Silent Night, Deadly Night III: Better Watch Out, we learn that killer Santa Clause Rick is still alive, but he's in a coma. Phew, for a minute there, I thought we were going to die. No wait, the script resurrects him as he sees the image of a drunken Santa, and the telepathic link he shares with a blind girl.
Anyways, Rick returns as killer zombie with brains in a jar and murders whoever he sees or anything that has red. From that point on, the film dies and we never see the killer Santa Clause. The laughs stop completely and the film becomes talkative and boring.
I don't mind a talkative film as long as the dialogue is interesting (Resevoir Dogs & Clockwork Orange). If that's not bad enough, we see clips of the original film which sums up the desperation this film has as it desperately tries to breed.
No wait, there's more bad news: low body county, logical errors, and terrible acting (the blind girl somehow sees even though she acts blind). This goes on until the confrontation where we know the blind girl (final girl) will live and kill Ricky as soon as he is done killing the boring male marty (run! Save yourself).
I don't think I'm spoiling anything because if you have seen a lot of slasher films, you know who's going to live at the end. Anyways, she kills Ricky in one of the dumbest kills ever (next to Jaws III and Jaws the Revenge).
