Review of Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) by Brian F — 01 Oct 2007
Weird and wild slasher flick that, for some reason, created a fair amount of controversy on first release. It's really no worse than any other slasher film of the period but I suppose the subject matter got a few people worried.
What's really strange, though, is that a Catholic orphanage would not only hire a Santa to appear during the holidays but would also encourage one of their priests to dress up like him, as well. Very strange.
Anyway, this is a fun and sometimes gruesome slasher flick which is notable for some truly random deaths. As far as I can tell, the first gal that Billy (our killer/hero) kills gets it because *she was raped.
* Odd. And poor Linnea Quigley had the gall to open her door topless. Her boyfriend in the flick gets it, too and he wasn't even at the door! No big deal, many of these slasher flicks have no apparent reason for their killings.
What matters is this: is the film stylish? Silent Night, Deadly Night is pretty stylish but it's also goofy and strangely edited with glaring plot holes. Still worth checking out for slasher fans.
