Review of Silent Hill (2006) by Sir O — 11 Nov 2011
Wow, I can't believe how critically panned this movie is. Granted, it won't win any awards, but it was entertaining and more complex than your average video-game adaptation. The creators did an excellent job with the special effects/computer animation, and the settings and soundtrack were very well crafted.
I could swear some of the scenes were lifted straight out of the video game. Of course, the film had its own faults as well. Instead of sprinkling in bits of info to help you figure out what's going on, there's a huge piece of exposition that was used to explain the plot near the end.
The first half was pretty good, but the second half got overly complex and involved a witch story that wasn't originally from the game. And like many scary movies, there was the occasional moment where a character did something stupid to move the plot forward.
(Seriously, why would anyone reach into a corpse's mouth?) Also, I was disappointed there weren't as many scary, tense moments. (That is what Silent Hill is known for after all.) Anyway, based on the reviews I've seen online, this is a "love it or hate it" movie, though I personally found myself in the middle.
