Review of Silence (2017) by John S — 15 Jan 2017
A very thorough, expansive, and intense story. The "silence" referred to is the familiar concept of God's silence to the prayers and cries of humanity, a concept which immediately brings some of Ingmar Bergman's films to mind.
This film feels very much like Martin Scorsese taking his own crack at it. The adapted narrative explores many compelling questions concerning the limits of one's faith, the trials of one's faith, the value of one's faith, the purpose of one's faith, and even the meaning of faith itself.
This is a lengthy but solid film. Overall, it is primarily recommended for Scorsese fans, those interested in the subject, or those who fancy proof of Andrew Garfield's talent.
