Review of Signs (2002) by Angel G — 10 Aug 2012
This is one of M. Night Shyamalan's more decent entries. It's a shame that he peaked with his first major hit. Each film he subsequently released had a decreasing amount of talent and intelligence put into it.
The strength of Signs is in the fear of the unknown. The film's marketing, synopsis, and early plot clearly point to alien activity, so that's no secret. But the elusive nature of whatever is causing these strange happenings, accompanied by the haunted, embittered performance of Mel Gibson (in his last really compelling role), make it an effectively creepy thriller.
I thought they went a little too far with the end, which wasn't so much a twist as it was a way to quickly tie everything together. Enjoy this film based on the fact that Shyamalan is likely never going to make anything good again.
