Review of Signs (2002) by Rere R — 23 May 2015
Occasionally having well shot scenes, This movie by the fallen director M. Night Shyamalan is far from good and has what can only be described as "the illusion of subtlety." How the wife's final words play into the final confrontation with the alien couldn't be less subtle.
The big climax was suppose to be surprising, but it instead comes across as ham-fisted and pretentious. Most of the dialog seems to be emulating other better written movies. More accurately, emulating the writing style of Quentin Tarantino by having characters talk about topics unrelated to the plot to have a "subtle" shot a characterization, but unlike Tarantino it's blatant and comes off as lazy.
Some of these attempts at characterization seem unneeded because most of the time the character going on about shit that doesn't matter isn't important to the story. In my opinion this movie was the beginning of the director's decent into mediocrity and it is a surprise to me that this film is even liked at all.
