Review of Sightseers (2012) by Ivy P — 17 Dec 2012
I feel duped by a slick marketing campaign that promised laughs. Never mind laughing out loud, I wasn't even laughing on the inside. It's not that the subject matter offends me, in fact the premise sounded hilarious.
It's the mix of high art pretension with a horrendously immature screenplay which got me thinking anyone who eulogizes over this weak comedy probably has a vested interest in the British film industry.
I heard someone say this movie is plausible, it maybe so, but it is not believable in the slightest. The characters make seismic shifts in point of view from one scene to the next without explanation.
Almost like their complexities are created out of an absence of design. For me the understated reactions to big moments begged the question, did they do that on purpose or was that a gaping plot hole? As well as being unbelievable, they are unlovable, irritating and just not interesting enough despite their many quirks.
A murdering couple better have some redeemable and relatable qualities or finding any pleasure in their abhorrent actions is deemed as fatal as a handily placed cliff outside a restaurant. That poor bride-to-be, she should of stood by the door like everyone else.
Maybe if Chris and Tina killed more people that deserved it, like the hippies and the hen party, I might of liked them more, but the next time there is a British comedy that's getting rave reviews I'm going to avoid it like a caravan holiday to Yorkshire.
