Review of Sightseers (2012) by Brice B — 22 Dec 2013
This movie didn't always click for me. I find it to be a step down from the incredible Kill List for Ben Wheatley and Alice Lowe. Yea the cast and the writing are good but I don't really see the point of the film's events.
Then again, there is a touch of a very strange coming-of-age story for Tina, as her sheltered life has, in a way, made her a little more ruthless, cold, and out of control when it comes to joining Chris in the murders they commit.
I think that's the best part of the story, seeing this woman, comically, come out of her shell and discover her more violent side, which she's very much in touch with. The movie does a good job at combining its darkly comedic moments with its horror elements, but in this case the comedy and the horror are actually closer, since both are pretty dark.
I do think the movie's climax is very good and it shows a very dark side to the romance between these two sociopaths. But, again, it doesn't always click for me. Almost like the film was STRUGGLING for material.
And the film isn't really that long at all. I still liked it, but it was lacking a certain something that would've made it just as great as Kill List. Still, it's a solid movie but one that's a bit hit and miss.
The last scene is tremendous though, so there's that.
