Review of Sightseers (2012) by Jonathan B — 02 Jan 2014
A painfully observed black comedy about a pair of suburban psychopaths who go on a killing spree around the lesser known tourist attractions English midlands and lakes. There's a great script which is wonderfully bought to life by the leads Alice Lowe and Steve Oram as knitting-obsessive Tina and caravanning geek Chris.
This movie had me simultaneously laughing out loud and wincing in pain as the murderous pair bash, push and crush their unfortunate victims. Director Ben Wheatley makes great use of the pregnant pause and gives us enough glimpses of the battered corpses to shock, without descending to gratuitousness.
This movie won't be for everyone but I thoroughly enjoyed it and was equally delighted and a little embarrassed to realised that the Keswick Pencil Museum is one of the few tourist spots that the murderous duo visit that I've not actually been to myself.
