Review of Sierra Burgess Is a Loser (2018) by Hidden T — 14 Sep 2018
Dull and cringey.
The only exciting part of the movie was the part when Sierra posted Veronica's photo. I absolutely adore Veronica's character but I just don't feel any sympathy to Sierra. I see the the main issue they are trying to shed light on but it also might come off to be unintentionally trying to normalize catfishing, which should never be normalized as this is a form of fraud.
If I were to be asked, Veronica should've been the main character of the story because she was the person with the biggest character development. Though her growth actually happened too fast to the point that it give out inconsistencies to her character. One moment she's the snobbish cheerleader who says "I wonder what life is like for losers", to a person who invites less a popular person around her. That doesn't happen in real life!
If they want to tackle real timely issues then they should also keep the story realistic. I don't know if I just view the world to be this dark but no person no matter how nice they are would go out with someone who catfish him/her.
I also don't like how one sided this story is. I hate to be the person who cries about role switching... actually I don't. If it was the other way around, if it was a boy who let his other boy friend catfish or kiss the girl they are trying to catfish the world would've freak out and call it rape.
