Review of Sideways (2009) by Colm M — 12 Apr 2011
A thinking mans 'Hangover'. 2 friends go on a wine tasting trip before one of them gets married. Miles utter pretentiousness about wine and literature is counter-balanced perfectly by Zachs dumb college boy humour.
Miles is a kind of depressed neurotic Woody Allen type character who finds himself lost in his middle age. His pal Zach, a 2 bit actor who never grew up, is lost in a different kind of way and finds fulfillment in basically shagging anything that moves.
This movie has a lot of layers. Its at times genuinely touching and intelligent (when Miles cryptically describes his personality to Mia using wine) and its also witty and brash like the contrast between the two friends .
As with all good wines the movie improves as it ages. I'm glad to say it 'reaches its peak' right at the end.
