Review of Sideways (2004) by Tomislav A — 14 Jun 2010
I thought I'd never get to see a romantic comedy worthy of 100% rating. I was wrong. Very wrong. I had this movie for some time now, and I never seemed to get around to it, especially after I took a quick glimpse of it to see what characters and settings are up the road ahead. I should never do that again. I will never do that again. My best genre experience 'till now was Forgetting Sarah Marshall and I thought that it would take something really special to outmatch it. Sideways is something special, and is better then FSM.
I did not see any real flaws in this movie and for the area it deals with, it is perfectly realistic while compelling at the same time. Script was unbelievably awesome and I can't remember when is the last time I laughed my heart out, sitting alone in my room, just because of the dialogues between the characters.
How can you not like Miles while seeing his life hits the rock bottom, while he is on the edge of madness. He is so freaking believable and you just wish you are somewhere out there to give him a hug. Paul Giamatti is great. I never got to see him in some significant roles, I never even paid attention to him anywhere but he definately won me over as Miles in Sideways.
His best buddy is Jack, played by Thomas Haden Church who was nominated for an oscar as a supporting actor here. His character was also hilarious but on a whole different level. His stunts as a man who is spending his last days as a bachelor were really amusing. And in the end he shows his real face and he is completely believable in doing so.
Jack and Miles are one of the most memorable best buddies I have seen on film. They can be a single reason why I recommend this movie to everyone, and you'll find plenty of other reasons while sitting and enjoying Sideways. I'm still under the influence of the brilliance I have just seen and I doubt it'll wear off any time soon. See this!
