Review of Sideways (2004) by Matthew R — 21 Aug 2010
A film about men and their views of relationships which at times is hysterically funny... and very sad in others. The main characters, Miles (Paul Giamatti) and Jack (Thomas Hayden Church), have a week-long "bachelor party" in California's wine country before Jack marries. Jack is out for a last fling (Sandra Oh) before settling down, and Miles starts out obsessing over his failed marriage then meets waitress Maya (Virginia Madsen) and falls hard.
This was an exceptionaly funny, intelligent and inspiring movie. Acting was outstanding and screenplay was superb. This movie will seriously want to make you write a screenplay. It's so well-composed, so well-written and naturalistic that you can barely see all the craft that went into it. Paul Giamatti gives another amazing lead performance. There is something special about him. You feel every emotion. You connect with every thought. In this film, Giamatti proves that he can carry a film, and carry it impressively. Thomas Hayden Church gives a scene-stealing turn as Jack, the best friend and soon-to-be groom, looking for some quick loving before he gets hitched. His comedic timing makes for most of the movies funniest moments, and his straightforward attitude with everything perfectly compliments Giamatti's down-turn character. The supporting ladies are also fantastic, especially Virginia Madsen. Her scenes are beautifully done, with such deep emotion. She doesn't overact at all, but through very subtle expressions, movements, tones in her voice, her Mya comes to beautiful life. In all, Sideways is a excellent comedy, lead by tremendous performances and a masterfully written screenplay. I wish Hollywood would make more movies like this.
