Review of Sideways (2004) by Edgar C — 11 Jun 2011
Half underappreciated, half underrated. When Giamatti is in a midlife-crisis leading role, you know you're in for a treat. As I mentioned in About Schmidt, Alexander Payne has rare comedy skills that work perfectly nowadays. Sideways has brilliant moments, no doubt about it. We are in a new era when intellectual comedies are the only cinema samples that can save the genre in this recent decades. Will there be an absolute, ingenious masterpiece that triggers the nerve of critics, or a next Woody Allen is never meant to exist in the future?
80/100.
