Review of Sideways (2004) by Turner E — 22 Nov 2013
Sideways is one of those rare movies, like Lost in Translation, where not a lot happens, but because the writing and directing is so strong, you're just along for the ride. It ranks among my favorite "dramaties" of the last few years.
Paul Giamaatti and Thomas Haden Church play Miles and Jack two friends who go on a wine tasting trip for Jack. In reality Jack just wants to get laid one last time before his marriage, but Miles is still recovering from his divorce. They meet two very attractive older women, played by Virginia Madison and Sandra, and they, Mile's especially, form a strong bond.
The film goes in several directions with some unexpected result. It always finds the right balance between drama and comedy.
Final Score: A.
