Review of Sideways (2004) by Brent B — 04 Apr 2015
Sideways is a remarkable film that expertly balances melancholy soul searching with hilarious, witty comedy. The heart and soul of the film is in Paul Giamatti's peformance as a deeply depressed middle aged man with a strong passion for wine tasting. The writing both expresses empathy for it's cast, while still allowing the audience to laugh at their misfortune. Simply put, despite the archetypal characterization of the the leads, these people and their plights feel (for lack of a better word) real. Sideways also does a great job of expressing the main character's passion for wine and writing without ever condescending to it's audience or feeling preachy. Also, special mention goes to Thomas Haden Church for his brilliant comedic timing and empathetic, rich depiction of a dopey and generally idiotic character. The acting really takes the character stereotypes and enlivens them with nuance and depth, making Sideways feel affectingly honest and insightful.
Hilarious, deeply melancholy and absolutely memorable, Sideways is one of my favourite comedies.
