Review of Sideways (2004) by Mike B — 09 Jul 2013
Arguably my all-time favorite movie. I get chills every time I watch this and find something new I didn't notice. Combining comedy, romanticism & drama so well and intelligently is very difficult.
Brilliantly adapted screenplay by Taylor & Payne from the Rex Pickett book. The cast is flawless from top to bottom with Giamatti stealing the show because he simply has the best scenes and lines.
He couldn't have played a better Miles Raymond. His chemistry with Thomas Church is exactly how you'd picture the characters relationship in the book. As soon as Jack & Miles pull out of Jacks in-laws driveway and he turns to Miles and says, "What the fuck, dude?" you know it's on.
So many classic scenes and lines. Giamatti & Madsen using wine as metaphors for themselves, the wine lesson, the Frass Canyon scene. "I had to run through an ostrich farm, dude. Those fuckers are mean.
" "I' am NOT drinking any fucking Merlot!" I could go on about this movie forever. Just hope if they Payne decides to do the awesome sequel 'Vertical', that it doesn't take away the amazingness of this.
