Review of Side Effects (2013) by Dana F — 14 Jul 2013
Boo! What is up with all the positive reviews!? I was expecting a return in quality to Soderbergh's earlier work, but was sorely disappointed. This movie is just plain hack. Both the style and the tone are great and really work (consistent of all Soderbergh films), but that's all I can say that's good about this movie.
The plot is completely asinine, there is not a shred of realism in it. It starts out like it's going to be a thought-provoking psychological thriller, but quickly descends into ridiculousness. I am so sick of movies relying on insanely complex and unlikely "evil plans" that unfold just as the villain intended.
Please! I expect more from you, Steven. Magic Mike was better than this, and that movie didn't even have a story.
