Review of Sid and Nancy (1986) by Jack F — 16 Mar 2008
It's always a little shocking when you're halfway through a film and you suddenly realize it's one of the best things you've ever seen. Off of my first viewing (there will be others, I'm sure) I can't praise Sid and Nancy highly enough.
Every scene is surprising and gritty and real and funny and sad and moving and the performances by Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb are spectacular -- at no point do you doubt that they are Sid and Nancy, two antisocial, unhappy people in love.
Although they felt only self-hate, you can't help but grow to love these miscreants, and the ending is extremely touching and totally satisfying. Alex Cox has his name enshrined for this alone. It's one of the best films of the 80's.
