Review of Sid and Nancy (1986) by Nikolai E — 28 Jul 2009
It's difficult to characterize any of the effects this film had on me as 'pleasurable,' but I was certainly compelled to keep watching. People confuse the 'truth' to be found in this movie with its accuracy to actual events.
They changed stuff, a lot of stuff, some knowingly, some perhaps not, but even the critics have to agree that it feels real, and that's what makes it harrowing. They just don't carry out great cultural experiments anymore on the scale of the 70's and 80's, and at the very least this is a ticket into one of the last of them.
