Review of Sid and Nancy (1986) by Lyn G — 14 Dec 2009
So here?s the truth, I didn?t have any real interest in the sex pistols before that strange reference in one of my favorite films of 2009 ?500 Days of Summer?. So after many scattered days of wikipedia reading on the overall Sex Pistols-lore, I found this little gem of a movie.
Although I read that several people found this film inconsistent with what actually happened in real life, I found myself apathetic and enjoyed this movie anyways. For me this film brings about memories of ?Trainspotting? in that it?s more than anything it?s about the downward spiraling life of a junkie.
However, this movie is different because it revolves around a bassist from the Sex Pistols, his crazed lover, and their terribly dysfunctional relationship. What is really seen here is a very twisted love story that from the get go feels like a disaster just waiting to happen.
Now even though I usually hate the kind of movie (ala Monster) that revolves around garbage ass human beings for the sake of it. I just cannot resist the fact that there is something interesting and nostalgic (I don?t know why, I wasn?t even alive) about these classic bands and their crazed anarchy/drugs/punk movement.
I liked Sid and Nancy for a lot for reasons I cannot understand myself. They were both idiots and like Alex Cox himself said ?died idiots?. But there?s just something very rock and roll in terms of the way the went about it.
On a side now after viewing this, I still don?t understand the reference in ?500 Days of Summer?. (How are they like Sid and Nancy? wth?).
