Review of Sid and Nancy (1986) by Astrid K — 11 Jan 2010
A most passionate love story put to film from the director of REPO MAN.
Chloe Webb IS "Nauseating Nancy" and Gary Oldman IS "Sid Vicious" in this wonderfully acted and cinematographed film of two souls bonded together in a rapidly disintegrating world around them.
ALEX COX read the 1979 article of the real life and death of the real Sid Viscous and Nancy Spungen in NEW YORK MAGAZINE and based SID AND NANCY primarily on the article and ignored many other sources and source material.
As a result of "ignoring" many other sources, many people condemn SID AND NANCY for further demonizing the enigma of the real-life Nancy Supngen and severely curtailing the "thurst" of the Punk Movement in England.
Deborah Spungen, Nancy's mother, spoke at my high school (RADNOR HIGH SCHOOL in 1988) advocating POMC (Parents of Murdered Children) which she founded several years earlier.
Deborah Spungen, who wrote her daughter's biography, entitled AND I DON'T WANT TO LIVE THIS LIFE, is hurt by Hollywood's treatment of her daughter's life and death.
Apparently ALEX COX used the rights to film the article to circumvent the Deborah Spungen's wishes to turn her daughter's life into a 2-part mini-series about her daughter's undiagnosed psychological illness and its damaging effects on The Spungen Family.
I LOVE SID AND NANCY because it describes Love in full-bloom accurately; I enjoy the film for what it is and not what it isn't or what it could be or could have been.
There's even an awesome shot of Nancy and Sid in the foreground of the doomed World Trade Towers.
(the "answer film" is THE FILTH AND THE FURY and a more recent study is WHO KILLED NANCY).
I hope anyone reading this with the ability to turn Deborah Spungen's biography of her daughter into a 2-party miniseries will contact Deborah Spungen today about doing so.
A Deborah Spungen/Nancy Laura Spungen based miniseries will help shed light and explanation on psychological illness and its devastating impact on family members and friends.
