Review of Sid and Nancy (1986) by Phil F — 15 Aug 2011
This is a great film. Sid Vicious I cannot stand because he got famous and reached icon status by having his amp turned off because he couldn't play bass and he may have stabbed a woman to death - so why all the T-shirts? Cant you so-called punks put on a Bad Brains shirt instead? Despite this Alex Cox has crafted a stylish and atmospheric tragedy.
Do not expect 100% accuracy, this movie takes a lot of liberties, just ask Johnny Rotten. Gary Oldman is really what makes the movie, his performance is riveting and surprisingly complex and layered - he gives us a side of Sid we'd never see if not for the great Gary Oldman.
Even if you are indifferent to the story and Sid Vicious there's enough truly outstanding performances and a story more interesting than the real life tragedy. A must see.
