Review of Sid and Nancy (1986) by Mirabella 1 — 26 Feb 2010
SID & NANCY (1986).
Written & directed by Alex Cox.
This is the definitive film version of the tragedy that was Sid Vicious & Nancy Spungen. Actually, it may be the only one...I am not actually sure!Alex Cox does a magnificent job of recreating both the look & the feel of London in the early 70s. Contributions from many of the key identities both in the UK & US punk music scenes (with the notable exception of John Lydon) really help to create a sense of realism that is rarely found in cinema. Also, the outstanding performances of newcomer Gary Oldman & Chloe Webb are so spot-on, that one often finds oneself forgetting that this is a film, not adocumentary. There is so much to admire about this film. Despite the squalor & self-destruction, it IS a love story & , though tragic & poignant, beauty still manages to shine through the grime.
NB : There is an excellent biography written by Nancy's mother, Deborah Spungen, called And I Don't Want To Live This Life. It offers a lot more insight into the troubled Nancy & also extra info on the couple.
*****5 out of 5 stars*****.
