Review of Sid and Nancy (1986) by Livingston H — 10 May 2010
This movie may as well have been retitled A Tale of Two Walking Tragedies, because that is exactly what Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen were.Gary Oldman's performance as the self-destructive Vicious is nothing short of masterful, and even the less known Chloe Webb gives a convincing enough performance as his fellow junkie/girlfriend Spungen.
I could not help but feel sorry for these two as they lived out their days in filth and squalor while drugs consumed their mind and body. The movie is disturbing on many levels, especially one particular scene in which Sid dreams he is on stage performing 'I Did It My Way' and he ends up shooting people in the crowd.
Bottom line:Anyone who finds humor in this movie has a sick sense of it,because there is nothing humorous about two young people barely in their twenties putting themselves in early graves.
