Review of Sid and Nancy (1986) by Adam H — 08 May 2012
A beautifully made, yet tradgic love story, Sid and Nancy takes us inside of the glamour of rock and roll. Sid Vicious was the bassist of the strongly opinionated and nonconformed Brit punk- rock band (According to my research, not the the greatest.), the Sex Pistols, and he epitomized the image of a hard core musician of the era. When Sid meets Nancy Spungen, an American groupie with a heavy drug dependancy and quick temper, they develop a relationship that has both the elements of passion and danger. It was commonly observed that it was Nancy that introduced heroin to Sid, but with so many people that you meet along the way, who really knows? Together, they spiral out of control, enveloping themselves in a dangerous elixer of drugs, and fast times.
While I did enjoy the film, there were a few pointers I did find not so engaging. The movie should have also reflected the positive aspects of Vicious' brief music career. It would have been even better if we saw his sober side. I also grimaced on how where Nancy met her fate; it was just a little too strong, even for a graphic film.
Overall, it was a great biography film, where has so many films fail to do. Perhaps today, Sid and Nancy would have gotten the help that they needed so desparately. It is so tradgic to lose someone so young due to mental illnesses.
