Review of Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018) by Anthony K — 22 Sep 2018
A sort of hopeless, grimdark "follow up" to the slow but brilliant Sicario, Day of the Soldado certainly has its fair share of scenes that emulate the tension of the gridlock scene in the first one.
It also looks surprisingly good, for not having been shot by Denis Villeneuve and his team. But there is almost no narrative momentum here; I couldn't care less what was about to happen next, probably because all of the characters are specifically engineered to be hateable.
I was also worried when the movie started that, if the timing weren't bad enough in this country for vilifying Meixcans, it was about to start vilifying Muslims as well. Thankfully, the story is actually about the US creating false flags to generate chaos in the southern region.
I dont think anyone wants to see another one of these.
