Review of Sicario (2015) by Wayne K — 10 May 2016
Sicario was a movie that sucked me in right from the start. With taut directing, tense action set pieces, and powerful, understated performances, it's a technical wonder. The story unfolds slowly and methodically, and we see everything through the protagonists eyes as they're widened by a world she was aware of but could not fully contemplate.
Many of the action scenes, which in a typical modern movie would be set to a heavy, pounding score, are done with almost no music at all. It might come across as boring and uninvolving to some, but to me it felt like the movie was truly mimicking real life, where these moments have no soundtrack, and all you can hear is what is happening all around you.
At times the film does feel like it's spinning its wheels, and many of the acting turns seem dialled down so low they might as well be sleepwalking, but it makes their lash out moment feel more genuine and deserved.
If you like a tense movie that takes its time, builds atmosphere and character and doesn't simply rush between action scenes, Sicario is well worth your time.
