Review of Sicario (2015) by Kyle V — 13 Jan 2017
Precise action blended with a thoughtful and psychological commentary about violence. the result is an intense and unique crime film.
The film has a thorough pace that walks us through a violent setting. Though the set pieces are fantastic, what buoys the movie is the intense glance of its subtext, the accumulated consequences of violence, and the toll it takes on those who are involved in the battlefront of violence.
Starring Emily Blunt as Kate, the FBI agent who is committed to her convictions, and Benicio Del Toro as Alejandro, a consultant with a shady background. Agent Kate has been enlisted by a task force, led by Alejandro, to help them in their war on drugs in the border between the U.S. and Mexico.
Standout performances from Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Toro complement the film's theme, showing that there is nothing glamorous about the implications of the ongoing war against drugs. You see the distinction between Kate and Alejandro, Kate's committed yet confused and troubled by how they conduct their investigation. While Alejandro is intense yet calm and collected throughout.
I admit, there are times when the film begins to be draggy and how certain scenes, even certain dialogue, tend to be facile. Overall, Sicario is a worthy watch that's anchored on a serious motif that makes its case.
