Villenueve is a fantastic director and it shows here. The cinematography and musical score are excellent. The scene direction, especially the Juarez scenes are pitch perfect. The story (Excluding the FBI leads) is well told albeit not an original one.

CIA are baddies is such a cliche now it's positively lame. Brolin is good, Del Toro is magnificent and the supporting cast does well also. The downsides are the FBI lead and her black partner. They are completely pointless.

Actually a hindrance to the narrative. It's like they were shoehorned in as affirmative action hires. They took the space that should been given to the low level Mexican policeman who was outstanding in his few scenes.

Woeful diversity casting cost them an Oscar.
