Review of Sicario (2015) by C M — 11 Jul 2016
I enjoyed Sicario in spite of the Emily Blunt character. I'm sure the writer tried to do a cross between No Country for Old Men and Point Break where the newbie Blunt is challenged by the realities of the Mexican drug war but that part just didn't jell for me. IMHO, I found her Kate character annoying, confused and petulant at times.
With that being said, Benicio Del Toro gives an engrossing performance as a "DOD adviser" with a secret and parallel agenda involving some very bad drug lords. He's somehow part of the Medellin cartel but is recruited (?) to take on one of the Mexican drug lords.
The action scenes are generally put together pretty well though there was a bit of fantasy since the characters are not concerned about the press as they shoot up several car-fuls of bad guys in the middle of a busy traffic . I mean this is the age of instant streaming using cell phones etc.!
Still, a pretty amusing movie if you can ignore Blunt as Kate and just enjoy Toro being moody. Three stars.
