Scorsese stepped into Lynch's and Kubrick's shoes and it was a bad idea. The end doesn't shock, but disappoints you. It seems the screenwriter couldn't think of something better. And the atmosphere wasn't thrilling.
The only thing left is to hope that Scorsese won't return to these experiments again.
