Review of Shutter Island (2010) by Tim C — 09 Dec 2012
This is a well-crafted psychological thriller in which Leonardo DiCaprio and Ben Kinsley delivery polished performances. A Hitchcock influence can be seen throughout and the foreboding theater of a dark and looming storm establishes it as classic film noir.
For a suspense movie, it has clear, often intriguing visuals to entice the viewer, only adding to its mystery. Confronting as some of the images might be, however, ultimately, it comes down to one question - is it preferable to live as a monster or die as a good man? Like the main character, the audience is left searching for answers, necessitating a subsequent viewing to see all the clues and pieces of the puzzle missed the first time around.
