Review of Shutter Island (2010) by Shayna H — 29 Jan 2013
Up until the climax I thought that this was pretty classic but ultimately the twist is lame and you could see it coming a mile away. The idea that the twist is semi-ambiguous is cool though and has an ending that you can discuss and ponder so that has to count for something.
Too many cliches tarnished this and all seemed to fall apart once DiCaprio enters the light house. I have to say that his scenes at the cabin seemed like they existed for an hour or so and really took me away from the cool noir feeling that was executed so well.
The dream sequences or hallucinations are pretty weak aside from DiCaprio as a soldier. The music was awesome up until the climax too. Definitely not Scorsese's worst by any means, Shutter Island is cool and does have some creepy and genuine moments.
There were just too many scenes that just seemed kind of dull, even with the twist. The cast was good here aside from a few playing random mental patients.
