Review of Shutter Island (2010) by Dave C — 16 Aug 2013
I just watched this on DVD and was pleasantly surprised. I had read poor reviews and heard a relative say how disappointed she was by it, so I didn't see it in the theatre, and now I am sorry. The people who were let-down seem to have been mislead by the advertising, which made it look like a supernatural thriller.
In fact it is a very moving story about mental illness; though that isn't clear until the end. It isn't going too far to call it a tragedy. The message I took from it is, how terrible it is that the best people are the very ones least likely to have the strength to handle the horrors of life.
Another remarkable performance by DiCaprio. Who would have dreamed the scrawny kid who was so embarrasing in "Titanic" would grow up to be so convincing in the darkest and most complex adult roles?
