Review of Shutter Island (2010) by Dann M — 20 Oct 2013
From Martin Scorsese comes the psychological thriller Shutter Island. The story follows two U.S. Marshals who are investigating an escape at a mental hospital for the criminally insane, but they soon start to suspect that things are not as they seem and that the hospital's conducting secret experiments.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Michelle Williams, and Ben Kingsley, the cast is quite impressive, and they all deliver excellent performances. The script however, is full of problems and is too enigmatic and mysterious to form a cohesive story.
But even in the confusion there are some interesting questions posed about sanity and the reality one chooses to live with. Shutter Island is well-crafted, but ultimately fails to deliver a compelling story.
