Review of Shutter Island (2010) by Ryan L — 25 Nov 2015
Shutter Island is Martin Scorsese back at home with this psychological thriller whose tension never let's up for a moment. Scorsese has made psychological thrillers in the past like Cape Fear, which has Robert DeNiro at his underrated best, and similarly Shutter island has Leonardo Dicaprio at his underrated best.
When a patient goes missing from the isolated institute on Shutter Island, two U.S. Marshals, played by Dicaprio and a phenomenal Mark Ruffalo, are sent to investigate. but once they get there, they start to realize that maybe everything isn't what it seems to be.
The acting in this movie is top notch of course, Leonardo Dicaprio and Mark Ruffalo, I am on board. both were oscar worthy, especially Leo. Ben Kingsley was also great as the head of the Institute. all of the actors who played smaller charcters like patients were also great. but come on acadamy, give Dicaprio a statue! The man is a different person every time he is on the screen! and in this movie, he is at his best, but he always is so oh well.
Being a Scorsese movie you can expect a few things, usually. one of those is Prefect flawless direction. and what do ya know, you yet that with shutter island. Scorsese's direction is a triumph among thrillers everywhere. I have not seen a better directed thriller since Seven. these two movies aren't alike, but they are both flawlessly directed. Scorsese developed such a mood of unsettled and unrestrained tension, that the movie never let's up until it's final chilling image.
Shutter Island is based off of a book by Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone, The Drop) and the script delivers everything Lehane created in this sick and twisted story. I've read the book and the movie is very similar. both are masterpieces in my opinion and I love both.
Overall, Shutter Island is a very intense, chilling, suspenseful, thriller that is criminally underrated (like Dicaprio). with flawless, well everything, this is one of my favorite Scorsese flicks, and one of Leo's best.
10/10.
