Review of Shutter (2004) by Daniel P — 12 Apr 2009
"Photography does not produce reality. It depends on how the image is framed. What is revealed. What is concealed. Your perspective is critical." A surprisingly subtle ghost story with a fairly clever concept, though the effect is somewhat lessened due to an over-saturation of these kinds of films (Ringu, Ju-On etc.
). Most of the scares come from, sigh, sudden screeches on the music score which is a shame since it's the gradual reveals in photographs and reflections which really linger in the mind. Refreshingly, back-story is simple which means there are no excuses for sequels or prequels (crosses fingers), and the central performances are very effective (which is lucky since the main character is basically an asshole).
Beautiful cinematography and good editing keep things interesting and the twist ending doesn't undermine what has gone before. It's just a shame the whole thing is a bit too familiar.
