Review of Shutter (2004) by David K — 15 Oct 2009
This film borrows a lot from other films. In fact, it was kind of fun to pick the movie that a certain scene was taken from. However, this movie is absolutely terrifying. Sure, the scares are "jump scares," but they're done so consistently well that I was still jumping at the end of the film when the novelty has normally worn out its welcome.
"Shutter" is a ghost story that is very much concerned with the power of film. This includes photography and the motion picture as we, as an audience, are indeed watching a movie filled with photos. The film provides interesting commentary on the power of the image and the reality or unreality of it as it pertains to ghosts but also to anything photographed.
The bottomline is that "Shutter" scared me consistently throughout its duration and that makes it a good horror film in my book.
