Review of Shutter (2004) by Liz W — 18 Apr 2010
This Thai film echoes many of the themes and creatures we see in J-Horror films.
You have the issue of water being a conduit for the restless dead, the haunting/curse as a result of cruelty, monstrous isolation as a precursor to death, the question of what responsibility the individual should take in the actions of the group or pair, and the needy female as monstrous.
It took me two evenings to work my way through the extremely tense first 15 minutes of the film, and to finish it, I had to crank the volume down to nearly 0.
The cinematic techniques used are wonderful: the small, multi-use living space becomes unbearably constricting, revealing very little and hiding too much.
This film builds upon many well-known J-Horror film themes and images. If you love J-Horror, this is a must-see.
