Review of Shrooms (2007) by Jonathan H — 18 May 2008
Wow, this film got some bad reviews. You know what? I liked it. It wasn't a turning point for the horror genre, but lets face it, what is these days? Since 28 Days Later, we've just been inundated with remakes of already decent movies (Rob Zombie, I'm looking at you, you bastard).
Anyway, Shrooms tells the story of 4 American teens and one English teen who take a trip (lol) into the Irish countryside (with no accents...) for some relaxing, camping and filling themselves copiously with magic mushrooms. A ghost story of an old youth offenders institute is told and then one by one, teens start getting hacked up by some pissed off Catholic ghost.
Formulaic it may be, but Shrooms has some atmosphere to it, which pulls it's cheap scares together with some cool camera effects. The acting is poor, but then horror isn't a genre known for oscar performances. Effects are good, action is fast paced and the ending is at least interesting, if a little Shayalam worthy. What a Twist!
