Review of Shrooms (2007) by Megan W — 28 Feb 2009

I give this movie two stars. I arrived at this determination via the following formula: it gets 4 stars as a starting point for "best use of a talking cow" in a movie, but then -8 for killing all the actors in the exact order that I predicted at the 15 minute mark.

.. it redeemed itself by having some pretty photography particularly during the "non-photoshopped-filtered" portions so +3 stars... and let's give it +9 stars for the pretty obvious warning to youngsters that it makes about psychotropic drugs.

.. however, it was downhill from there, losing -1 stars for having some pretty confusing editing and a general lack of story beyond what one would expect from a half-hearted ghost story... maybe out of pity, I'll give it back three stars for at least trying to have a twist ending even if that ending was sort of weak.

.. but finally, and lastly...-8 stars for such cliche imagery as antique wheelchairs sitting in empty rooms and boys with potato sacks on their heads. "Session 9" did it better my friends... "Session 9" did that all better.

.. just like I don't bother playing violin because I'm not a 4 year old prodigy, you shouldn't try to do the wheelchair in the empty room gimmick... cause SOMEONE ELSE HAS ALREADY DONE THAT WAY BETTER.

Put your energies elsewhere. The wheelchair's been done. Maybe do some blood-covered hands coming out of vents to grab ankles... that never gets old.
