Review of Shrek Forever After (2010) by Gradhito O — 17 Jun 2012
I had a good time with my buddy, Shrek..and all his friends were there too.
The big part of what makes this movie series work is the chemistry between Shrek and Donkey or comedians Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy if you want to get specific. Their outstanding voice overs and impromptu ad libs make the magic come to life, and making the characters much more than likeable, they are downright loveable and unforgettable.
Could a movie with a talking Ogre and talking Donkey be successful any other way? Highly unlikely.
Wonderful voice acting and award winning animation is what truely makes these movies ( 1 -4 ) so spectacular. The animators really get it, the voices and faces are a perfect match and put so many others to shame.
Dreamworks really out does themselves every time, with quality rivaled only by Pixar.
Many of the favorite characters from the Shrek "Family" comprise this movie and compliment our star but, take on a considerably smaller roles. Puss in boots and Donkey are mostly in the background adding commentary rather than influencing the plot.
Once again we have a new and improved villain, and not unlike the first, he's a pint sized man with oversized ambitions. His name, I bet you can't guess it, ok it's Rumplestiltskin. A very peculiar and under utilized character ( in my opinion) from fairytale lore. He's the perfect fit for a Shrek villain.
He definitely has his own unique personality, style, and flare; making him one of the most enjoyable villains of the Shrek universe.
I tend to enjoy the musical numbers in this movie, more than I did in any of the other films, and I usually despise song and dance routines in a movie, but not this time. That a lot more than I can say about Toy Story.
I'm not sure how the 3D worked in this, but regardless it was very rewarding albeit a tad short. It really gave me a glimpse of what an actual World of Warcraft movie might be like.
Shrek Forever After was a great movie for kids, and even redeemable for adults ( compared to the majority of CGI films that aren't ).
