I guess you can say "Shrek" changed animation for both the better and the worse. For the better, it showed that Disney and Pixar weren't the only companies capable of making entertaining animated films.
Because of this film's success, many other animation studios have opened up; DreamWorks Animation itself has become one of the most profitable companies in the industry. For the worse, however, the public has had to put up with numerous sequels and imitators for the past decade.
Honestly, I'm glad the film series recently ended.
