At heart this is a simple tale of an unlikely heroes quest taking on an unsympathetic authoritarian figure. Shrek, the ogre of the title finds himself and his companion, Donkey, tasked to rescue a princess from a fire breathing dragon.

This animated tale is a firm favourite with the kids but watching it recently, it doesn't have quite the same appeal as say, Toy Story does for the adults. For me, all the best laughs come in the scenes near the start where Lord Farquaad's men are rounding up the fairy tale characters.

After this, it does become a little flat. The animation is good and Eddie Murphy especially makes the character of Donkey stand out above all the others. It's his wise-cracking and insightful eagerness that carries much of the action.

Shrek stands up well as an example of this genre but is definitely in the second league when pitched against other, much better rivals.
