Review of Shrek (2001) by Jonny B — 26 Apr 2012
By this point Pixar had already released two hugely engrossing Toy Story films which, it is fair to say, hit the jackpot on practically everything an animation needs to be excellent; it can be said that this was Dreamworks' response!
Toy Story is basically in the Premier League as far as animation movies are concerned - near the top I might add. But director Andrew Adamson stepped up to the improbable task of creating a similar masterpiece with Dreamworks and he has done just that.
Shrek (Mike Myers) is a feared ogre who is sent on a voyage after the trapped Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) with the assistance of an irritating Donkey (Eddie Murphy). He is sent by Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow). He does thi reluctantly after Farquaad claims that if he refused he would rid Shrek of his beloved swamp home.
Eddie Murphy, who we all remember from The Golden Child, Nutty professor and Beverly Hills Cops is hilarious as the voice interpretations of Donkey while Myers puts in a realistic performance as selfish ogre Shrek.
Thankfully, Dreamworks hit the jackpot just like Pixar with a mesmerising tale which is definitely not Ogreated but more Shrektacular!
