Review of Shrek (2001) by Mimi S — 04 Nov 2012
Grade: A*.
I absolutely love Shrek; it has to be one of my favourite movies of all time. Shrek has to be the best animated movie ever. The film is about a lonely bitter and reclusive ogre who lives in a swamp; people fear him and plot to kill him just because he's an ogre. However when the evil Lord Farquaad sends the fairy tale creatures to his swamp, Shrek embarks on a mission with new found loyal friend Donkey, to save Princess Fiona in order to get his beloved swamp back. Shrek is highly original, creative and has some great pop culture gags. Shrek isn't just a film for children; its a film for people of all ages and something that adults will love as well, which makes it so brilliant. The voices are excellent; Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz bring their characters to life. The other characters are also memorable and amazing; I love the ginger bread man and the three little pigs who speak in a German accent (I loved that concept). Shrek is a mixture of funny and touching, which is rare for a movie. It brings many important themes and messages close to home, such as judging a book by its cover, loneliness, friendship and love. This is something adults and children alike can learn from. A truly heartfelt and brilliant animation which is a film for everyone.
