Review of Shrek 2 (2004) by Luke N — 18 Nov 2013
Until recently, I had always kept quiet about my opinion that the 'Shrek' sequel was actually better than the first one. But surprisingly, that seems to be the case amongst many people. Whether or not they are fans of the first one, I'm not sure.
But I have enough respect for the first movie. I still think it was a very fun and enjoyable experience, even if not as clever as it made itself out to be. But to be honest, 'Shrek 2' is just one of those rare occasions when the sequel not only lives up to its predecessor, but actually improves on it.
Saying that, its charm and satirical humour is just the same as the last time, but the story is much more imaginative, not just banking on 'Repunzel' and 'Beauty & The Beast'. The characters - both good and bad - are much more memorable, where as Lord Farquaad was the only stand-out secondary character in the last film.
The comedy is much better and more consistently delivered, and the story itself is more emotionally engaging, with enough "nicer" scenes to make you feel for Shrek. And it is this element - the general light-heartedness prevalent throughout the first two films - that really makes 'Shrek' work.
Its complete absence in the third film clearly marks how important it was.
